FAQ
Q: How long have you been doing art?
A: I liked to draw since I remember. I began drawing as soon as I could keep anything that can leave a line on a flat surface. My earliest drawings can be seen here.
Q: Are you a self-taught or a student artist?
A: Self-thaught so far. I didn't take any specialistic art courses and I can't think of art in elementary school as a course.
Q: Do you have any tips for aspiring artists?
A: 1) Never give up, 2) PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! 3) there is no "talent"; everyone have equal chance to learn to draw; the thing is, some people forget how to draw in their early age, 4) there will be always someone better than you, deal with it.
I have few more advices/tips pasted into descritpion under one picture. You can view it here. Please keep in mind there may be a lot of English errors.
Q: Do you have any tutorials?
A: I consider my YouTube videos as tutorials since you can see all tool settings and the process in order. However I did one painting tutorial in the past. The folder where tutorials are is here.
Q: What program do you use?
A: GIMP (2.6.7 version). If otherwise, it is said in the description.
Q: What tools do you use in GIMP?
A: My typical set is circle brush under default settings and ink tool with the settings as you can see here. I think the round/circle brush is the most comprehensive brush. While other brushes may be very specialized, they are also more restricted. It is just like in the nature: rats are great in many environments but a panda can only do well in a small area.
However I do use specific brushes at times. I have GPS (Gimp Paint Studio) downloaded and there are few brushes I tend to use often to achieve nice texture in my paintings.
If you are curious what tool I use at what moment, you can try pause my videos in full screen mode.
Q: How do you manage your layers? What are your layers used for?
A: I don't like working with many layers; I tend to mix up the layers and paint on a wrong layer. Generally, when I paint I have a set of 4 layers, but I use 3 of them:
- background,
- sketch layer with finished sketch (if colored, the sketch layer is composed with 2 layers done during sketching: lineart and basic color sheme) - later deleted or merged with the actuall painting layer.
- actuall painting,
and, when the painting is closer to finish,
- layers with details (they are being merged during the process).
Drawings have similar basic set: background, sketch, color layer and lineart. However I tend to use many layers for colors, shadows and lights. So, in my videos you can often see: background, sketch, few color layers (later merged in one final color layer), many layers with lighting and shadows, lineart, highlights or lineart's color changing layer.
Q: How do you get the little window which can show your painting entirely, in a smaller view?
A: View -> New view. Or you can watch the video: [link]
Q: What other graphic/art programs do you use?
A: MS Paint for fast photo edition, Colors! 3D because it is great software for a handheld, Alchemy because it is fun, FireAlpaca for nice linearts and not complicated drawings, Blender to make 3D models, ArtRage (not very often), Inkscape to resize an image without loosing quality. I used SAI twice and I think it would be nice to have this program. I also was using Pixia in 2009.
Q: What program do you use to record your videos?
A: You can see the program's name in the upper left corner of the video: HyperCam. After I record the process I edit it in Windows Movie Maker.
Q: Do you use a tablet or a mouse?
A: I use Wacom tablet, being more detailed: Wacom Bamboo Fun, model CTE-650W.
Q: Is drawing with a tablet easier?
A: Definitely yes. It is easier, feels more natural and it speed up the painting/drawing process. However, I think it is possible to achieve great effects with mouse. You just need much more patience and time.
Q: How long does it take you to make one picture?
A: That depends on the complexity of the picture. Some drawings take 1,5 hour while some paintings several hours. Usually my painting is done in about 3-4 hours.
Q: You have more drawings on your DeviantArt Gallery than speed-painting videos on your YouTube channel. Why don't you post more videos on your YouTube channel? Can't you record everything you make?
A: Sorry but I have very little free space in my disc and my cpu's RAM isn't the best either. I can't afford long recordings. Either for space reason and for lagging. Long complicated and detailed paintings cannot be recorded. I don't record sketches or random ideas that actually ends as finished paintings as well.
Q: Why don't you post more videos of traditional process?
A: I don't have the camera anymore. Besides, I had a little renovation and my windows were changed. I can't do something like this again.
Q: How come you can't remember the name of the songs in your own videos?
A: Most of the time I use YouTube's audioswap tool. After few updates it works horrible and I hate using it. Usually I just pick ANYTHING listenable and leave.
Q: Can you draw ____ for me?
A: I don't do free requests under normal circumstances. You can commission me however. Please look up my commission status. Commission information is avaiable here.
Q: Can you critique my work?
A: You DO NOT WANT me to critique your work. You don't have the faintest idea what are you asking for. Trust me.
Actually, each time when I get such request, I reply with this message:
My critiques are not for allYou see, I think the best way to learn, is to say directly what suck. You won't learn from praises, you know.
Not all people can afford my words. Actually, most people are unable to stand them.
My critiques are harsh, painfully honest and straight. People are often offended by my critiques. I will see every error in your work, every mistake or wrong attempt. I will show you those errors in the most direct way, without nice words. I won't be easy on you and I won't make my critique sweet.
Of course, art is a complicated matter, and my point of view may be subjective (even if I try my best to be objective).
I know that harsh words hurts, even if they were mean to do good. So usually I refuse giving a critique. I don't like making enemies.
If you do think, however, that you must ask me for critique, be sure you have something that I can actually look at. (I told you).
Q: Can I use/edit your work for my projects? Can I post it on my blog?
A: 1) I have linearts free to use in this folder.
2) You cannot edit my original work, gifts, trades or commissions unless such work has specific Creative Common licence or I give you permission.
3) You are allowed to post my fanart on your blog. You cannot change my fanart in anyway. The only alter I accept is putting my pokemon fanart pictures or part of them in a pokemon card. Please give me credit by puting my DeviantArt name or Karolina 'Twarda' Twardosz in a description and by adding link to my DeviantArt profile.
You have to ask for permision to post commissions and personal work on your blog.
4) DO NOT post any of my work on Facebook without my permission.
5) Read THIS journal!
Q: Do you have more accounts on different sites?
A: Why, yes!
YouTube
Tumblr
Furaffinity
Weasyl
Colors!
Nabyn
Pixiv
Digart
Q: Are there any differences between your galleries on different art sites?
A: The DeviantArt gallery is my main gallery; a center that spreads in other galleries. Tumblr is basicaly my scapbook and personal blog. Sometimes it gets more finished works or wips. + pokemon. Furaffanity is my second in command account, it doesn't get all the drawings that DA gets; it gets more furry art and mature art though. My YouTube channel is dedicated to speedpainting videos, but I may upload something game related from time to time. Digart, Pixiv and Nabyn are minor galleries, updated randomly with random art order. Nabyn however gets more sketches updates and recent artworks. Colors Gallery gets 3DS drawings, obviously. I plan to make a summary of my all accounts on Weasyl; I want Weasyl to become a representative fusion between DA, FA and Tumblr; I want make it the third gallery in command. Facebook was made to take the username and to post updates from all my accounts. I have also an account on Flipnote Hatena and Spore. However I don't use them now.
Q: What did the part "XanaX" in your username stand for?
A: Many years ago I named that a royal family/clan/line which appear in my comic book, ZZiI. I didn't know that the name Xanax is used for a psychotropic drug. I used the name XanaX whenever the name "Twarda" was taken. "Twarda the Xanax" was the idea for my username and it ended as Tarda8the8XanaX.
After many thoughts I shortened the username, leaving one "8" and changed the royal family name to Sanax.
hidden message in Kanto starters

Btw... have you ever noticed kinda hidden [criptic] small texted message in my first three realistic pokemon starters paintings?
It is one message that continues in those three pictures. There is one more message, on Totodile, but it shows nothing, lol.
I mention about this because a part of it was featured on DumpDeviant few months ago, hehe. No hard feeling, it's actually funny that it ended there, but it still bothers me, because it is out of context and indeed it sounds dump xD
Generally *goes to my not so well known account that I will mention sooner or later too seek my comment that nicely fits and sums it*
-I was lost while I was drawing it. I didn't catch "the thing".
-"The thing" that makes art trully perfect, in each way you look at it. "The thing" makes your art so perfect, that any opinion, any comment, any critique is unable to change that.
Sometimes it is about your motivation, sometimes it is about details, sometimes it is about knowledge and experience [skills].
Motivation can make art great even if you don't have any skills, details can add nice touches to your art and distract viewer from lack of inspiration and skills, skills can give you the advantage if you do not have motivation.
You need 'feel' your art, you should want finish it, you should have your brain constantly attracted by your picture.
So:
"If I say my picture is bad, then it is bad.
If I say my picture is good, then it is good."
is related to "the thing", while
"I decide if my picture is fully finished.
If I said I'm unsure about my picture then I expect critique and serious comments."
Mentions that I have my rights to choose if I finish the picture or not, if I should leave errors on it or perfect it more. And if I choose to leave error, then it is fine and no advice is nedeed. (Because I sometimes do errors and don't correcting them or even I do errors for purpose).
And the critique part is about all those people that either say good thing only or bad things only, without adding something building.
~
Yeah. Now, when my conscience is clear, I can move forward [to another thing that is sorta related to those small text messages].

That is actually a side note... But I think it is worth to mention.
Sometimes instead of nice and good description/artist's comment I write something as pathetic as emoticons.
But that doesn't mean that I have nothing to say.
That actually means I have definitelly TOO MUCH to say.

I could just sums it with "awkward sketches are awkward" or even " ;/ "
