This will be quite long people. And may contain a lot of engrish. Feel free to tl;dr
First of all I want to say I'm excited. They are finally trying to add something new in the franchise, thanks Arceus. Lets begin of how I see the pokemon history, with some of my own background.
Pokemon Green, Red, Blue were the first pokemon games that appeared in the world. Apparently, the idea of catching and collecting monsters and then using them in battles was something perfect for its time and it succeeded. Then anime was made.
I remeber that times. The world, people, literaly gone mad. Pokemon were everywhere. There was anime that everybody was/were watching, TCG, Tazos
from Cheetos (I still have my pretty impressive collection
), stickers from Boomer bubblegum, crappy magazines that tried bite some money, movies, bootlegs, figures, plushes...
When I watched the first episode of the anime (I didn't have enough money for GB or games, duh, so I barely even knew about them) I had that dreamy feeling I saw this somewhere else, like dejavu. Like when you see something (the Charmander in the intro gave me that feeling) and you feel like you know it, like you have watched it before, but you haven't. The episode was either about Vulpix or about Magnemite. I must admit, after I just watched one episode and immediately drew my first fakemon. The cartoon that focuses mainly on monsters and those monsters could be use for good or bad was something just for me. I liked monsters before and nowadays I still prefer drawing monsters than people.
RB were games that were (and still are) good. The graphics may not be impressive for nowadays kids but it was good enough for its times. The music is still great. The monsters
, well, let's not judge. The thing that makes those game good is "soul" (heart or whatever you calling that).
The games were pretty simple, but very addictive. There were mysteries and secrets around each... pixel and they kept you excited.
Those games were also probably the most creepest games from all pokemon games: people kill pokemon, hit them with whips, experiment on their fetuses, cloning them illegaly etc etc...
I consider Pokemon Yellow as a little nerdy game, but the one that, possible, began "third version" trend.
Next generation was something astonishing. However at the time when it came people around stoped being so excited about pokemon. Maybe they got bored, maybe they grew up, maybe "pokemon rip-offs" (as I call them) took place, I dunno. At the time only true fans stayed tunned. Luckily I was the one who got GS before everyone around had it (not many of us had money for GBC, duh, and I got mine accidentaly). The game was bootleg fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/i/201…
and names of pokemon had 5 character limit and names of the newer ones based on their japanese names (eg: Burak for Umbreon Burak in my language means beetroot, btw... But here, if you call a someone "burak" it is offending, it is like calling somebody a "hick". Funny, isn't it?
). It was a poor engrish translation, damn it had parts that looked like this: ":::....::....,,,!!.." so I had no damn idea wtf is going on and wtf to do.
Because I got the game and I was playing it I saw many pokemon that other people didn't know about. It was before the Johto placed anime arrived to us, if I good recall.
While the first games were good, the 2nd generation was perfect.
I considered the second generation of pokemon games as the best games that were ever created. Untill BW came, but I will tell about this later.
GSC games are sequels, literally. GSC games have 2 regions. GSC games have 100 new pokemon, and most of them look great. They have the first generation feeling, but at the same time they have something I'm calling "eye frame", which is quite characteristic for this generation. I belive many of those pokemon were going to be in the first games (there supposed to be 190 pokemon in GRB, MissingNo. are just those deleted pokemon), and even after some redesigns they kept that "thing" the original 151 have.
Generally GSC are essence of the pokemon, perfection of the pokemon, there are sequels and they follow up RGB very well.
About that time I stoped watching anime, and kept playing my bootleg countless times.
However when I finally got GBA I went to a shop to look for a nice game for it. And since I had very good memories from GS I immediately picked Sapphire.
My first reaction was: WTF AM I SEEING? Y THOSE POKEMON LOOK LIKE CRAP? I CAN'T CHOOSE ANY
STARTER need ask friend for a help D: (I picked Torchic as my first starter btw, buttface Treecko was ugly and Mudkip was weird).
But seriously. Pelipper? Zigzagoon? Illumise? Slaking? What just happend? Did they fired old designers?
Then I was like: Why those pokemon have such weird cries? Where're day/night changes?
And then: WHERE ARE PREVIOUS REGIONS???
Don't get me wrong, the game was enjoyable to play, even if it had a lot of water, and there are some few good looking pokemon... However... the game... it was not the same. The feeling of mystery disapeared, I felt forced when I was catching the monsters. Whenever I encountered anything from previous generation I was like: "oh, finally a normal pokemon to see..." And I also played Emerald, but this haven't changed anything. RSE were an average games.
After that I stop giving a damn about pokemon. I saw some weirdos on Cheetos pack and I facepalmed to them. When I created Motrahs in SPORE people were saying they are similar to Dialga. I was like wtf. Those pokemon are getting reaaalyyy weird.
Actually I'm amased if there were some fans at this time. DP anime was running, and it was crap (with dubbing it was even worse). Pokemon were (and still is actually) considered as something immature and childish. I bet being a fan at the time was very hard. (And it is hard now, when I say I'm pokemon fan people look at me like I'm retarded).
But then I got pretty bored, for curiousity I got DS emulator and Pearl so now I could see what's going on in the pokemon.
That was the worst pokemon game I have ever played in my life and I regret playing it. The same boring plot again, awful music that hurts my ears and monsters.
IV generation pokemon are crap. Most of them are just lazy "revamps" (preevos and unecessary evolutions), some new ones are even worse (Spiritomb??? Heatran as legendary???) with very, very few good looking ones (if I good recall I counted 5 or 7 decent looking designs). Moreover, there is so little diversity in wild pokemon to choose in the game that for the first time I stayed with 3 pokemon in team, where the third was forced because two pokemon team is really ghetto team. I had starter, Sonic on all four (Luxray) and... Zubat. Imagine how desperate you have to be to catch Zubat in a first cave and train it, praying that the pokemon will be good (apparently Crobat is awesomeness, but I didn't know that yet. This is the only good point for playing the game: it made me aware that Zubat can be a decent pokemon). fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/i/201…
And how about the graphics?www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmZyBC…
This is GBA game, people. GameBoy Advance game.
You know what? I think such graphic (the 3D effect in DPP) could be easily done in GBA. I'm not impressed. The battles looks good though.
(I didn't finished the game btw, for the first time I gave up in pokemon game. However I have Diamond now and I enjoy the game more than Pearl. Still, awful music, weak plot, crappy pokemon and awkward interface is painful).
And then, suddenly, they announced. They announced something good. Really, really good. Heart Gold and Soul Silver. I almost pissed myself. Dear Arceus, this was the most epic game announcement I have heard in years. And, guess what? My pokemania returned and I became pokenerd. The life was wonderful.
Only thing: I had no DS and cash for games.
But with some delay I got the games.
They are good. Really, really good.
While DPP 'introduced' 2 screen interface, it wasn't perfect. I have Diamond now and I can easily say in some moments it hurts to play/use the game. HG/SS perfected touch screen interface, generaly interface. You want to do more with the second screen, it is fun and so natural.
I was also afraid about "shitty music syndrome", after playing the Pearl, but most music is good in HG/SS.
I won't say more about HG/SS, just paste the part with GSC and add some nice graphical touches, really good music remixes, few additional subplots and there. I can't even complain about this game because all bad points there aren't that bad or it is nitpicking. I consider the game as the second the best pokemon game (GSC win for nostalgia value, but just slighty
But as you could seen, within those many years the same story repeated: use the same plot, add new characters, put it on a new system and voila, call it a new game. But remeber to do two versions of the game, with minor differences, so they will be forced to buy more games to beat the game in 100%. Next do the third version of same game (but change or add few stuff in it), and sell it for the same price. Repeat this for another gaming system.
When BW came it was a quite different game. Sure, most pokemon designs looks crappy, but designers were at least more creative this time. Sure, you are still a kid who starts journey from a small town and then kicks ass of an evil team. But this time it is more aspiring. This time pokemon feels like a game
. No, seriously, for the first time, since GSC (I remind you I didn't have RB first), I felt that I'm playing a game. A real game. And I wanted repeat my adventure (that's why I got Black rencently btw). This game, with GSC, is the best pokemon game that was made so far. It is different, it is more creative, it is good.
I have problem with graphics... the games aren't that colourful like DPP, sometimes graphics is ugly. I don't like "3Dish" moves animations (I mean moves themself, not animation in battle overal) and there is a little step back from HG/SS in touch screen interface. And it is painful to not having "A" assigned to "L". The menus are clustered and the pokedex is really awkward to use. But in other hand "X" button for cancelling everything at once is a really good idea. As well as "Y" menu. Oh, and the text box doesn't pops out of nowhere when you accidentally "hump" a sign, which is good too. The bike is quite... wild. It was better in HG/SS or DPP. But those things aren't that
important. The important is: they finally tried to do something new in the franchise.
What would you like to get:
The same game over and over, with crappier characters but better graphics or something new? While new not always is good, this kind of new I see in BW I consider as good.
After a while veryone began talking about the possible Gray version. Me? I tried not thinking about this thread. I really disliked Gray idea. Hell, I had a small argue with someone where I said I know they do the third version each time but I have hope they will not do this again. And it kept annoying me that people were talking about Gray like it something obviously obvious. I would like to wait for facts.
I really hoped they will not do the Gray version. There were argues about Black Zekrom, White Reshiram and Gray Kyurem but it didn't have any sense to me.
I decided to wait.
I watched the Pokemon Smash, streamed online, waiting for news. I knew that something is comming.
And I cannot say how happy I was when they announced BW2. It was like all my hopes came true.
Still, I don't know how the game will look like but I know they are trying and I think it is a hight possibility it will not another revamp of previous 2 games.
What does BW2 possible mean?
-We will not get the same game for the third time.
I don't understand why people are complaining here. If you want play the game again, buy the version you don't have. Do you have White? Buy Black. You have minor changes as well. Just as you would have in Gray.
-The story may be more complicated that we see now. Which is good. BW themself are good games. But who knows, maybe the sequels will make them ever better?
-Tehee, finished Route 4?
I have thoughts that they will bring back pokemon companion walking with you. Can you see all those pokemon from Dream World in the forest? There are overworld sprites for pokemon. I know this is quite a stupid hope but I treat this as a clue. But in other hand as a sequel, why BW2 would add this? hmm.
-The new games will be done more quickly. We know that already.
I bet they have been planing the sequel since BW announcement came.
-We are finally seeing how the franchise is changing. At least I hope so.
-RSE for 3DS?
Yes, that's what I think. People. Why did you want RSE remakes so badly? Sure, you may liked RSE but look from my view:
RB got remakes because they weren't compatibile with newer games and, what not nerdy kid will play GB anyways?
GSC were originaly for GBC. Yet, they are still 8-bit games. Thankfully they remade them on DS, there was actually a quite good reason to do it. It's a huge improvement between systems. And still, GSC aren't compatibile with newer games.
RSE? They are quite new games. 16-bit games. And somewhat compatiblile. But look at the graphics. I said I belive it is possible to make DS-ish graphics on GBA. Between GBA and DS is not a huge impovement. In fact PSP is a system where impovement would be seen. DS is a crap. Yes, I said that. I have DSi, I like it but I can see that is 1) revamped NDS (almost nothing new, the same game system, only more expensive), 2) it is inferior, especially in my country, to PSP. 3DS in other hand is a dfferent story. I think this system has potential. However it is expensive and it kinda lacks in games. But enough of gaming systems offtopic.
The possible remakes made now wouldn't be as different as the originals.
However. Remakes on 3DS is a deal. A good deal.
For now I feel like everyone wanted to "force" Nintendo/Pokemon Company/GameFreak/whoelse is running this thing to make RSE remakes because they did that to previous games. Just because of that.
I'm quite sure they will do the remakes, they know that people wants the remakes. They know they can earn money for that. They will do it. No need to be hurry.
